Pink Beach Lombok: Nature’s Rare Wonder

If you’re looking for a beach that feels like it belongs in a dream, Pink Beach on Lombok’s southeast coast should be at the top of your list. With its soft blush-coloured sand, clear turquoise water, and thriving marine life just offshore, it’s one of Indonesia’s most unique coastal experiences — and a paradise for snorkelers.

Why Is the Sand Pink?

The pink hue comes from tiny fragments of red coral and foraminifera, a microscopic marine organism with a red shell, that mix with the white sand over time. The result is a subtle pink shoreline that glows warmly at sunrise and sunset. It’s not a bright neon pink, but more of a soft, natural blush — and it’s real, not filtered.

The Snorkelling World Just Offshore

What makes Pink Beach special isn’t just the view from the shore. A few meters out, the underwater world comes alive. The fringing reef here is healthy and shallow, making it perfect for both beginners and experienced snorkelers. You don’t need to take a boat far offshore — the best spots start right from the beach.

What you’ll see:

1.       Colourful coral gardens: Brain coral, staghorn coral, and soft corals create a vibrant backdrop.

2.       Tropical fish: Expect to swim alongside clownfish, angelfish, parrotfish, and schools of yellow snappers.

3.       Sea turtles: Green sea turtles are frequent visitors to the seagrass beds near the reef.

4.       Giant clams and sea stars: Look closer in the shallows and you’ll spot them nestled between rocks.

Visibility is usually excellent from April to October, when the sea is calm and the water is clear. Currents are generally mild, but it’s always wise to check with your guide before heading in.

How to Make the Most of Your Visit

1.       Go early or late in the day

Mid-morning and late afternoon offer the best light for both photography and snorkelling. The water is calmer, and you’ll avoid the midday crowds.

2.       Bring reef-safe sunscreen and a rash guard.

The reef is delicate. Protect your skin and the marine life by using reef-safe products and avoiding contact with the coral.

3.       Go with a local guide.

While you can snorkel from the beach, a local guide knows the safest entry points and the best spots to see turtles and larger fish. They also carry spare gear and can point out marine life you might miss.

4.       Combine it with a trip to Tanjung Ringgit or Tangsi Beach.

Pink Beach is part of a stretch of stunning coastline. Many visitors pair it with a visit to the nearby cliffs of Tanjung Ringgit or the quieter Tangsi Beach for a full half-day trip.

Getting There

Pink Beach is about a 2-hour drive from Gerupuk or Areguling, followed by a short trek down to the shore. The road is bumpy in parts, but the view at the end makes it worth it. Most visitors arrange a driver or join a day tour that includes snorkelling gear and lunch. Pink Beach isn’t just another pretty coastline. It’s a place where the landscape and the ocean work together to create something rare. Whether you’re floating above coral gardens or simply walking along the pink-tinged shore, it’s the kind of place that stays with you long after you leave.
