*Mawun Beach, Lombok: Lombok’s Quiet Horseshoe Bay*

If you’re looking for a Lombok beach that still feels untouched, Mawun Beach deserves a spot at the top of your list. Tucked 20 minutes west of Kuta Lombok, this crescent-shaped bay delivers turquoise water, soft white sand, and a calm that’s hard to find on Bali’s busier coasts.

Why Mawun Stands Out

*1. The bay itself*
Mawun is framed by two green hills that curve inward like protective arms, creating a natural horseshoe shape. The water is electric turquoise and glows in the sun. It’s shallow and calm near the edges, making it great for swimming and floating, while the middle picks up stronger waves for a quick swim or surf.

*2. Low crowds, high tranquility*
Unlike Kuta Mandalika or Selong Belanak, Mawun hasn’t been swept up by mass tourism. You won’t find rows of beach clubs or loud music. Instead, expect fishing boats bobbing near shore, coconut palms swaying in the breeze, and space to actually hear the waves. Travelers often call it one of the last beaches on the south coast that feels local and calm.

*3. Local vibe*
Locals still use Mawun daily. In the morning you’ll see fishermen pulling nets. Kids from the nearby village sell woven bracelets for around IDR 5,000, and warungs like Ibu Siti’s serve nasi campur for IDR 25,000. Rent an umbrella for IDR 50,000 and park your bike for IDR 10,000 right at the gate.

What to Do at Mawun

- *Swim and relax*: The water near the center is waist to chest depth for 20-30 meters out. The east and west sides are calmer for families.
- *Surf the east point*: A small surf break works with a 1-2m swell from the southeast. It’s shallow, rarely crowded, and good for beginners.
- *Hike the hills*: Trails on both sides of the bay climb steeply but reward you with unobstructed views over Lombok and the Indian Ocean.
- *Drone shots*: The headlands curve perfectly around the bay, making it one of the best spots for aerial photos on the south coast.

How to Get There

Mawun is about 8-10 km west of Kuta Lombok, a 15-20 minute scooter ride. Rent a scooter in Kuta for around IDR 100,000 per day.

From Kuta, head onto Jl. Mawun next to The Living Room Hostel and follow the sealed road up winding mountain roads. You’ll pass viewpoint stops and Bangkang Cave before descending to a small sign pointing to Mawun Beach. Enter “Pantai Mawun” in Google Maps and it’ll take you straight there.

Best Time to Visit

Arrive around 8:30 am to beat small tour groups and enjoy the bay when it’s quietest. The dry season from May to October gives the clearest water and calmest weather. Even in February during monsoon, the bay stays relatively empty.

A Few Things to Know

- *Facilities are basic*: Expect a few warungs and umbrella rentals, but no big resorts or beach clubs.
- *Bring your own gear*: Surf and snorkel equipment isn’t available for rent on the beach.
- *Help keep it clean*: Some visitors mention litter. Support warungs that clean the beach, like Bagas Resto.

Why Travelers Love It

Mawun was named one of Indonesia’s best beaches by international visitors, with _Travel and Leisure_ calling it “off-the-beaten-path” with powder-soft sand and glowing water. It scores 4.1/5 on Tripadvisor from nearly 600 reviews, with most praising the calm water and lack of crowds.

*The bottom line*: Mawun isn’t about nightlife or crowds. It’s about slowing down, floating in warm water, and having a slice of Lombok that still feels like it belongs to the locals. Pair it with Selong Belanak and Tanjung Aan for a full South Lombok beach day.
